Dent Middle School Student Wins National Award For Volunteer Service

Anthony Frederick, an eighth grader at Dent Middle School, has been selected as South Carolina's top Middle Level youth volunteer in the 2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Anthony will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. May 5-8, during which he will attend numerous national recognition events.

Anthony earned the honor by literally turning lemons into lemonade. His organization Kids Inspired by Cancer Kampaign has raised more than $19,000 primarily for cancer research. Both of Anthony’s parents have been diagnosed with cancer. The organization also seeks to improve the lives of the elderly and homeless.

He began selling lemonade and some of his own toys, before passing out fliers and finally recruiting college and professional athletes to serve at the stand.

Anthony is one of two honorees from South Carolina.
